Health Benefits of Hemp Seeds – Boosting Immunity

Because I love hemp, I decided it was time for me to look into the health benefits of hemp.

Essential fatty acids, especially omegas-3 and 6, are one of the most critical nutrients to an optimal immune system.

Because hemp seed is one of most balanced sources of omegas, I asked Dr Bronwyn Blake (Vasse Valley) to explain why hemp seed should be included in everyone's diet. Here is what she had to say.

Healthy eating is more important than ever as COVID-19's effects grip our country.

A diet high in plant-based foods is a great way to prevent infection.

Our bodies need to make its own compounds from the compounds found in plants. These include enzymes and neurotransmitters as well as cells.

These elements help to keep the body in balance and function properly. These elements are essential for a healthy immune system.

Essential fatty acids, especially omegas-3 and 6, are one of the most critical nutrients to an optimal immune system.

Hemp has many health benefits in your diet

There are many health benefits to hemp, especially omega-3.

These scientifically supported benefits include:

  • Anxiety and depression are reduced
  • Better eye, brain, and cardiovascular health
  • Children with ADHD have fewer symptoms
  • Reduced symptoms of metabolic disorder
  • Combat inflammation and autoimmune diseases
  • May help reduce asthma, liver fat, and menstrual pain
  • Some skin conditions and improved sleep
  • May aid weight loss

Here's the twist! Many of these conditions can be treated with medicinal cannabis. The common factor is the body's Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

The ECS acts as a homeostatic regulator, ensuring that biological balance is maintained.

It communicates in close, constant communication with its immune system. Are you beginning to see the connection?

Finding the right balance

Did you know that your body can make its own cannabinoids. These compounds are what is most associated with the cannabis plant.

The ECS is unable to function properly if the body doesn't produce enough cannabinoids (endocannabinoids).

What are Endocannabinoids?

Here's the last piece: Endocannabinoids, which are lipid-based neurotransmitters that are synthesized from fats, carry messages all over the body.

Studies have shown that increasing your intake of omega-3s, and other essential fat acids can increase your production of endocannabinoids.

Important to remember that these fats must be in the right proportion.

The ECS can be stimulated by a healthy amount of omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Arachidonic acid is an omega-6 fatty acids that produces the endocannabinoids.

Arachidonic acid is vital for the production of endocannabinoids. However, too much can cause problems with cannabinoid receptors.

Hemp seeds have Omega-3 and 6 as well as health benefits

To ensure that the ECS functions properly, omega-3 fatty acids are required to balance the omega-6 fats.

These fatty acids can be difficult to find in the diet.

The ideal ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 in a diet should be about 2:1. However, the average western diet has a ratio of 10 to 1.

Hemp seed is one of the best sources of omegas.

In 2017, hemp seed was made legal for human consumption in Australia and is now a staple in many households.

Hemp seeds are a nutritional powerhouse. They contain omega-3, 6 and complete protein. Hemp seeds have approximately 3300mg Omega-3 and 8100mg omega-6 per 3 tbs.

Hemp seeds have a high ratio of omega 3 and 6. Hemp seeds contain 33% protein and almost all of the essential amino acids.

Additional sources of Fatty Acids

While hemp seeds are wonderful, a varied diet is better. Ground flax seeds and flax oils, chia seeds and walnuts, as well as eggs (pasture-fed and omega-3 enriched).

Include some of these foods in your daily diet.

As a dairy-free alternative to milk, I recommend making your own hemp mylk (recipe at the end of this blog). Use hemp seed oil and Vasse Valley’s award winning dukkah to make a salad dressing.

That was a lot of information, huh?

The bottom line is that fat is essential to your diet as long as it is in the right amount and in the right proportions.

These good fats are essential for the proper functioning of our body and immune system. Mother Teressa said, "To keep a lamp burning, we must keep adding oil to it."

  • 3/4 cup raw hemp hearts
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 date optional

Instructions

CONVENTIONAL METHOD

  • Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy in a blender
  • If necessary, filter through a fine mesh cloth and nut milk bag.

THERMOMIX(r), METHOD

  • Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Mix for 1 minute at high speed 9.
  • If necessary, filter through a fine mesh cloth and nut milk bag.

Notes

Keep in the refrigerator for up to five days
Before each use, shake. Enjoy!

Once you have the basics down, it's time for you to begin creating meals to support your new lifestyle. Consuming whole, unprocessed foods will speed up your body's adaptation to this new way of living. A few simple tweaks, such as adding more healthy fats and proteins in each meal, can significantly improve energy levels and focus while helping with cravings.

The next step is learning proper portion control and managing meal timing while on the keto diet, enabling your body to enter a state of ketosis where it begins burning fat instead of sugar for energy. You can track macros and consult with a nutritionist for one-on-one guidance.

All newcomers need to take their time during the first week of transitioning into the keto diet - making sure that their bodies adjust accordingly before going full throttle with their diets. You should get plenty of rest and keep hydrated during this transition. This journey should take at least three weeks before you decide whether it is for you. Everybody reacts differently so be patient and give your body some time.


How much fat do you need to eat?

You need to ensure you are getting enough essential fatty acid when following a ketogenic lifestyle. Healthy fats include avocados, salmon, and nuts such as walnuts. It would also be a good idea to include other fats in your diet such as butter, olive oil, coconut oil, and/or ghee. These fats can provide many health benefits, such as better cognitive function, digestion and a stronger immune response. It is best to consume between 25-35% to 25% of your calories from fat.

Remember that ketogenic eating means being mindful of the fats that you consume. Avoiding saturated and trans fats is a good idea as they can raise your risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other chronic ailments. Instead, focus on incorporating healthy fat sources such as olive oil, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish into your diet. Doing so will ensure you get the essential fatty acids and other nutrients your body needs to stay healthy and energized.

It is important to eat the right fats and be aware of how much. Too much fat can lead you to weight gain. However, too little fat can cause fatigue and other health problems.
